The 28-year-old Coatesville victim claims that the day of March 7, 2020, was like any other until her friend of 12 years, Adam Hathaway, of Baltimore, went to the house she shared with her 7-year-old daughter, Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan said.

When she asked him to leave, he assaulted and strangled her, even throwing her into a glass mirror, all while her young daughter slept upstairs, the DA said.

Hathaway then forced the woman into his car, threatening to take her into the woods and kill her, according to investigators. In an attempt to escape, the victim repeatedly grabbed the steering wheel to cause a crash before she was finally successful.

Coatesville police officers responding to a nearby call noticed the crash in the 500 block of East Lincoln Highway and saw a screaming woman get out of the car's passenger side, they said. She had ripped clothes and blood on her face, police said.

Hathaway tried to run away, but officers captured him shortly after, they said.

Hathaway was also sentenced to three years probation, after pleading guilty to aggravated assault, kidnapping, strangulation, and terroristic threats.

"The victim is commended for her smart and brave actions in causing an accident to get help. Hopefully, she finds justice in Judge Sommer’s sentence and can begin to move forward with her life." DA Deb Ryan said.
